Exactly the type we wished for and tried to point out to local government would be more beneficial than 19th/20th century industry. I'm not sure how much 'economic development people' helped here - perhaps with Eurial, but I think Etsy did it on its own initiative, following a tradition set by the new pioneers on Warren Street starting in the mid- 1980's.

Your point about development with no downside is great. I run a small business in Columbia County, glencadia.com. I also think my location is kind of perfect and impact on the environment low. Still, I have suffered terrible harassment by the government here in Stuyvesant, punishing me for exercising my constitutional rights. I wanted to expand and start a new business that dovetails on my customer list in the city, a CSA with a vacation component, but I can't because the town I live in, Stuyvesant, is too corrupt for further investment. In my experience, open accountable government, democracy and a healthy environment for economic growth are synonymous. Government corruption can gum up the works in every aspect of human life, including the economy. Hopefully none of the ventures listed in this great blog post will encounter the same level of corruption and government abuse that I have. Thanks for a great entry. Will
