Nancy, I'm a vegetarian myself, and share many of your sentiments. I think eating animals is macabre, and have discussed similar concerns with the owners, Chip and Dan.

Still, I view the practices of Grazin' and the few farms like it kind of like my hybrid car: the hybrid still uses gas, and still pollutes. It's still a car, albeit one that uses half as much fuel as most others.

That's a step in evolving our society the right direction, as are Grazin's practices. The Animal Welfare Approved certification, as I understand it, refers not just to how the animals die, but how they are treated when they are alive. The cruelty of CAFOs and other industrial-scale agriculture is horrifying by comparison.

If all cars were hybrid and all farms used Grazin's methods, we'd be much closer to a healthy and humane world. And one step closer to people

As for Grazin and others who consider themselves operating and serving animal products, theis process is 'for the welfare of animals'. In any cicumstance where an animal is being slaughtered and held for the production of consumption, is not for the welfare of the animal. There is no humane way to slaughter an animal. I do not condone the consumption of animals, i choose not to...but the point is, no matter how you slice it (:)) it is not for the welfare of the animal. Letting them be free is.
